STONE TOWN DOORS, ZANZIBAR

Stone Town is bursting with colourful charm and even more colourful characters! A curious melange of history, Zanzibar combines a potent and heady cocktail of Portuguese, Arab (Omani) & African. And the result is seriously seductive.

The city of Stone Town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a historical centre of the slave trade. The city sits on the beach whilst featuring a large port. It’s beauty is alluring with cobbled streets, hidden coffee shops and quirky shops. The best way to explore is to get lost in its side streets and narrow alleyways.

It is safe but there are some interesting characters so awareness and caution are key.

In particular, the beautiful doors are a highlight. The inscriptions and carvings are a story of its original dwellers. Arabic, Indian and European styles can all be seen. Even those who dealt in the slave trade before it became illegal showcased this fact on the doors.
