THRILL OF AN EMERGING DESTINATION
The ultimate thrill of travelling to an emerging destination is that electric moment when you know you’ve uncovered a rare find. On any normal itinerary of 2-3 weeks, this occurs infrequently. In Guatemala, in just a fortnight, I was struck by regular intervals of sheer elation, surpassing all my expectations of the Central American beauty.
HIGHLIGHTS: MOUNTAINS, LAKES, VOLCANOES, BLACK SAND BEACHES
People are my passion. By now, you know this much. Travelling to remote towns in the highlands, discovering miles of jet black sand beaches with not a soul in sight, watching fishermen in tiny colourful beachside villages earning their living and playing with their children, absorbing the frenetic chaos and explosion of colour at rural and extremely local markets, photographing people and finding paradise on the epic volcano-clad Lake Atitlan, staying in stunning boutique residences, all proved unforgettable highlights.
ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE
But it’s the people of Guatemala that really stand out. The warmth, friendliness and welcome has been one of the best I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. For an emerging country, it’s as authentic as it gets, retaining deep-rooted beautiful cultures and traditions whilst still being open to a traveller wandering around alone.
